Euthanasia Poll April 2015

Research NZ surveyed 501 people:

  • 74% support doctors being allowed to end a patient’s life if they request it and have a painful incurable disease
  • 20% opposed to doctors being allowed to end a patient’s life if they request it and have a painful incurable disease
  • 51% support a close relative being allowed to end a patient’s life if they request it and have a painful incurable disease
  • 41% opposed to a close relative being allowed to end a patient’s life if they request it and have a painful incurable disease

A Herald on Sunday Key Research poll found:

  • 54% favour marriage equality, 38% against
  • 60% support euthanasia, 18% are against, 16% say depends on situation

Assisted Suicide/Euthanasia poll

Research NZ did a poll of 500 people from 4 to 12 August:

  • 47% say assisted suicide should be legal in NZ
  • 44% disagree
  • Only 39% of under 35s agree, but 51% of over 35s agree
  • 49% of Europeans agree but only 37% of Maori/Pacific agree

Morality of New Zealanders

UMR polled 750 NZers from 30 July to 2 August 2009. Findings:

  • The most morally acceptable activities were divorce (81%), sex before marriage (77%), birth outside marriage (71%)
  • Homosexual relations deemed acceptable by 61%, euthanasia by 55%, abortion by 55% and gambling by 52%
  • Least acceptable are human cloning (7%), polygamy (11%), affairs (13%), suicide (20%), animal cloning (27%) and the death penalty (41%)
